TAWA FLAT
BUSES AND ROADS
A report was received from a committee at the last meeting of the Tawa Flat Progressive and Ratepayers' Association which had been set up to consider improvements in the existing bus service. Suggested improvements, it was stated, had been sent to the organisations in the districts served by the bus service for their consideration before the Railways Department was approached for action. Councillor Clark, of the Makara County Council, outlined a proposed plan for improving roads in the district. It was pointed out that the change-over from rating on the improved to unimproved value did not make any appreciable difference to the amount of money available for roading. The council aimed, it was stated, at a high standard in future roading, and planned to make the existing roads kerbed, channelled, and surface-sealed, and a minimum width of 24 feet. It was stated that a mile of road done to those specifications would cost I approximately £3000, and as there are 110 miles of road in and around Tawa Flat and Linden considerabls finance was necessary. The meeting favoured the suggestion of putting the roads at central points in first-class order over a period of years, rather than raise a large loan for the whole area now. To finance that work it was proposed to levy a special rate. That matter will be gone into at the next meeting.
