PEACE CELEBRATIONS AT TE ROPU CLUB
A peace celebration and "thankyou" afternoon was recently held at Te Ropu Maori Club, Lower Hutt, when Mrs. 'Hapi Love, presided. Mr. Johannes Andersen gave a delightful impromptu talk, and other speakers were Miss Lee (who,-also lead the prayers and thanksgiving), Mesdames J. Andersen, Barnard, D. A. Herbert, J. Thornley, O. M. Shakespeare, Miss Mowbray, and Mrs^G. Te Waari, secretary. A large Union Jack and other bunting adorned the wall and P.latform, and spring flowers made bright decoration against the black, white. and brick-coloured scroll work of Maori origin on the walls of the hall. Miss Margaret Winter and Miss Gwen Jackson, first-prize winners for duet in the Wellington Competitions, sang, and Mr. D. Hamilton, of Nelson, also sang two solos, accompanied by Mrs. Shakespeare. Mrs. Hapi Love was thanked for her work for the Maori Battalion and other servicemen, and was presented with a bouquet of spring flowers as a token of appreciation. The committee members were also thanked. Photographs of the Maori Battalion were on show, also other servicemen who had received parcels; many ot these had made the supreme sacrifice, including Lieut.-Colonel E. T. W. Love.
