MANY CALLS ANSWERED

BUSY MONTH FOR RED CROSS

The past month has been an excep- 1 tionally busy one for the Red Cross Transport Service. The rehirn of many ! servicemen and prisoners of war and the arrival of a hospital ship have been added to the normal miscellaneous demands made on the service. The altered times of arrival of ships sometimes necessitated a last-minute reforming of plans and one very early morning call was made for drivers from outlying suburbs. Special transport was arranged for over 100 servicemen, guests of the Racing Club, to the Winter Meeting at Trentham; groups were taken to the Ford factory, W. D. and H. O. Wills's factory, to a concert given by Americans touring the Pacific, to one of Isador Goodman's^ concerts, to a lecture given by Dr. Elliott, and to hear "lolanthe." Normal calls were also more numerous than usual, special cases being driven for treatment, to football, and other sporting events. Total mileage for entertainments and miscellaneous duties was 2676, and for shipping and clearing station duties, 11,354. In addition, first-aid classes have been held and many other duties performed. Other Red Cross groups contributing to the splendid total of work done are the Red Cross Women's Club, with numerous duties, including cafeteria work and UNRRA packing; the women's relief auxiliary, which has made and distributed numerous articles of clothing; the Red Cross cafeteria, which continues to carry out its valuable work of serving many hundreds of cups of tea, coffee, and cocoa at the Wellington and Hutt Hospitals cafeteria for outpatients, and to help with the sewing of dressings in the surgical dressings department. The blind committee has kept in touch with blind people, giving that service and cheer which are so valuable and so quietly and regularly carried on. The instructional sister reports that regular classes of home nursing, firstaid, hygiene, and sanitation have been carried on.
