SLEEPY FOX WINS

HAILED AS A CHAMPION

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) SYDNEY, September 1. Sleepy Fox created a most favourable impression at his first start in Australia. He won the Canterbury Stakes so easily that his connections are likely to run him in the Epsom Handicap, in which he is topweight with 9.11. Iv today's race he gave the field a start over the last live furlongs, yet won unextended by a length and a half, and could have bettered the time, 1.12, which was only three-quarters of a second outside the course record for six furlongs held by another New Zealander, Beaulivre. Sleepy Fox astounded hardened racegoers by the ease with which he beat some of Sydney's best horses. The "Sunday Telegraph's" Turf editor says: "I think Sleepy Vox is the best horse since Ajax, and might 1)0 even better than that champion. It was the best performance seen in Sydney in the war years. Sleepy Fox's jockey, 1). Munro. treated tho opposition with disdain. He let them all get away to a Hying start, gathered them in at will, and was never hard pressed to gain a very easy win. In the fleld were Civic I'ride. our fastest three-year-old, Flight, our best weight-for-age performer, and good handicappcrs in Gay King and Victory Lad. I <io not hesitate to say that ho could have beaten (hem by 10 lengths." Munro admitted after the ra-ce that he does not. know how good Sleepy Fox is. Munro said: "Ho did not begin fast, but when ho got into his stride he flew. I could have raced past Civic Pride any time from tin-half-mile." Thu Australian manager for Sleepy Fox. 0. F. Trigge, saitl: "On yesterday's form it looks as if Sleepy' Fox would win any Sydney weight-for-ngo race."
