BASKETBALL

DOMINION TOURNEY

Although returning from the recent New Zealand basketball tournament without a trophy, Wellington's representatives gained experience which should prove of great value, the team on this occasion being quite a young one. Accuracy in shooting was not one of its strong points, and the need of more concentration on developing this essential to success was made apparent from experience at Christchurch. In that connection the points for and against made an interesting study, particularly in the case of Wellington. They were: —For, Canterbury 153. Wanganui 128, Auckland 128, Otago 124, Hawke's Bay 115, Southland 104, Wellington 83; against, Canterbury 103, Otago 105, Auckland. 118, Wellington 120, Wanganui 123, Southland 126, Hawke's Bay 145. As winners of the New Zealand Cup, Canterbury produced a fine scoring trio. Otago, as runners-up, took the Annie Brown Cup. It was the first time in the history of the tournaments that neither Wellington nor Auckland figured as trophy winners. North Island teams, however, carried off the honours in the second and third grades. Manawatu won the President's Shield (second grade) comfortably, and may play in the first grade next year. Rotorua-Bay Plenty won the Hayhurst Cup in the second grade, with Horowhenua and Wairoa equal for the Kiwi Trophy in the third grade, and Taurang.?, making their first appearance at a Dominion tournament, taking the Armstrong Shield (for runners-up in the third grade).
