U.S. ARCHBISHOP

VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND

The Most Rev. Francis Joseph Spellman, Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York and Chaplain-General of the United States Army, is expected to visit New Zealand shortly. Although advice of his visit has been received by the New Zealand authorities and the Catholic Metropolitan of New Zealand (Archbishop OSnea), the exact day of his arrival and whether he intends to spend some time in New Zealand are not yet known. Archbishop Spellman, who was the first American bishop to be consecrated at St. Peter's, Rome, visited Italy in the early part of 1943, and was the first prelate from an enemy country, other than a nuncio, to be permitted entry to prisoner-of-war camps. While in Rome he had audiences with Pope Pius XII, and visited the Vatican at the Pope's special invitation. He later went to North Africa where he made an inspection of Catholic work among United States servicemen.
