SWEEPING OF WATERS
APPROACH TO MALAYA AND SUMATRA
Rec. 11.20 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 2. British and Indian mine-sweepers began to sweep the Malacca Straits at dawn today, preparatory to the occupation of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Singapore, reports a SouthEast Asia Command communique. The mine-sweepers will have to carry out several days of arduous sweeping before they can clear a lane of safe water for the fleet and the convoys which are ready to pass down the straits to Singapore.
