JAP ATTITUDE TOWARDS GERMANS.
The Japanese appeared un-co-opera-tive towards the Germans throughout the war, and "missed no chance to do the Germans dirt when their backs were turned." When the armies were sweeping through Malaya and the Philippines southward, most of the Japanese were arrogant, but the lower class was not too bad, neither was the Royal clique, which was proud of its English connections. The official class was "insufferably overbearing." The people resented sending food abroad. They were told that each conquest would bring new; riches, but these did not materialise. "Newcomers note the people s enormous industriousness," says the "New York Times"' representative. "The tremendous bomb damage is already cleaned up. Tiny houses are swiftly built. There are none of the shattered, useless walls marking Manila. Everything, including thought, is so obviously geared for war that it is difficult at the moment to imagine anything other than the basis of the military system for Japan. The only immediate hope seems to be the people's industry put to constructive uses. At present, this guidance seems obtainable only from the throne. "The Japanese newspapers are lambasting the military unprecedentedly and with the Americans in Japan before the Russians and the other Allies, it is the best chance we will ever have to mould things here. Certainly, if elections are held in the next six months, the Japanese will vote overwhelmingly for the Emperor and whatever he wants. "If anyone was unpopular in Japan today, it was Tojo, who was widely accused of bungling the war and of black marketing. Nevertheless it is impossible to discover what has happened to Tojo. The Japanese are protecting all former higher-ups, particularly those prominent in the war."
