ISLAND BAY EXCHANGE

The building now being erected for the Post and Telegraph Department at Island Bay is to house an automatic telephone exchange only, according to information received by Mr. R McKeen, M.P. (Wellington South) from the Acting Postmaster-General (Mr. Jones) in reply to his inquiry. The'establishment of the exchange is necessary, says the Minister, to relieve congestion in the Wellington South exchange and to provide for future growth at Island Bay. It is proposed, when conditions permit, to erect a new post office and postmaster's living quarters on the Parade, where a site was recently acquired approximately opposite Avon Street.
