EQUIPMENT OF PORTS

SYDNEY, June 22,

"Compared with main New Zealand ports, the cargo-handling facilities in Sydney are archaic," said Mr. H. Barnes, national president of the New Zealand Waterside Workers' Union, at present on a visit here. He was commenting on criticisms that cargohandling methods at the port of Sydney are obsolete. What mainly surprised him on the Sydney waterfront was the lack of overhead cranes, he said. This meant cargoes could not be stacked" so high and congestion occurred more frequently- _ '"

• "You do not have to go all .the way to Manchester to find modern ports," said Mr. Barnes. "Just go across to Ne,w Zealand. We consider Wellington is the best,' with Auckland not far behind, and even smaller ports like Dunedin and Lyttelton ahead of Sydney."
