IM.Z. WOMEN SUPPORT BUTTER RATION
There was no question of the rightness of the step taken, said Miss M. Toulson, DorniniQn president of the Business and Professional Women's Clubs, referring to the cut in the butter ration.
This was one of the women's organisations which had brought pressure to bear that had been partly responsible for the reduction, she said, but at the same time the necessity existed for helping people to learn how- to handle their foodstuffs in yiew of the cuts, by a knowledge of dietetics and of ways of managing on the quantities to be available.
The decreased ration was also discussed by members of the Dominion executive of the National Council of Women,1 who adopted a resolution at their meeting in Wellington approving the reduction. Women's Institutes, also, through their Dominion president, Mrs. H. J. Barnicoat, expressed sympathy with the effort to assist the people of Britain.
Mrs. A. B. Smith, Dominion secretary of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, said that members were conscientious about insisting that there should be no waste of food in their homes. This was specially noticeable in the case of butter and cream on dairy farms. "If they could, members would send a shipload of supplies themselves," said Mrs. Smith. The necessity of the sacrifice was also realised by the Women's Service Guild, Wellington. "As a housewife, I know we can make do and replace the loss of butterfat with other foods," said Mrs. J. Henderson, president.
