MERCHANT NAVY'S PART

Some vivid experiences of shipwrecked survivors of the Battle of the Atlantic were recounted by Captain Tether in a talk to a recent gathering of the Birmingham and Midland Counties' Association. The captain took as his subject "The Merchant Navy." One episode of recent date was the destruction of a" vessel which, after evading the U-boat menace and safely discharging its cargo of foodstuffs at Antwerp, was hit by a V 2 bomb. Captain Tether made a special appeal that the sacrifices of the Merchant Navy in this war should not be forgotten and emphasised the quotation of the late King George V: "The Merchant Marine is the jugular vein of the Empire." The evening opened with the singing of patriotic choruses, and prior to the usual observance of one minutes' silence. "There's a Land" was sung by Mrs. Jefcoate.
