NO BETTER

AUCKLAND GAS POSITION

P.A. AUCKLAND, June 1. The Auckland Gas Company hopes to give about an hour's gas service tomorrow. It might be of indifferent quality. The. position for the rest of the weekend was obscure tonight, but it was hoped that coal would arrive in the morning to ease the position. There will be no gas for industry next week

AUCKLAND, June 1

The seriousness of the position was illustrated this afternoon, when at one stage the gasworks was completely out of its effective supply of coal. All odd pieces of coal that could be found were raked together, and men were sent into the hoppers to recover any that had lodged in the corners. Four trucks of coal, amounting to 30 tons, the remainder of a consignment from Wellington, arrived by train in the evening Even with the present restricted gas supply the city and Devonport works require about 150 tons a day between them, and for normal service the daily consumption at the two works is 227 tons.
