HEALTH IN SCHOOLS
CONFERENCE HELD
The Director of School Hygiene, Dr. H. B. Turbott. presided at a conference of district nurses in Wellington yesterday, the object of which was to ascertain means of co-operation on health education in the schools.
Others present included Dr. S. Mulholland, school medical officer, Wellington, Mrs. Barker, nutritionist attached to the Health Department, and several city headmasters. The New Zealand Educational Institute was represented by its past president, Mr. J. Barnett.
Dr. SmiSii stated that a scheme of health education within the schools through the school medical officers and the district health nurses was already in operation. ' It was suggested by Mr. Barnett .that there should be 15-minute health talks; also that brief and simple leaflets might be taken by students to their parents. The topics might include pjosture, diet, the value of sleep, personal hygiene, exercise and cleanliness, water supply, drainage, disposal of rubbish, the fly menace, minor ailments such as scabies, ringworm, and impetigo, and talks on epidemics, precautions to be taken, symptoms, and treatment. .
