AUSTRALIAN GRATUITIES
CANBERRA, May 25,
A Bill providing for the payment of a war gratuity to members of the fighting services was introduced by the Acting Prime Minister. Mr. J. B. Chifley, in the House of Representatives today. The gratuity was given for honourable Service in the war, and was to be regarded as distinct from the steps to be taken to meet the obligations of the nation to service men and service women through legislation covering repatriation, employment preference, vocational training, land settlement, and other matters, said Mr. Chifley. The Bill provided for two rates of payment -of the gratuity—7ss a month for those who served overseas, and 15s a month for those who served in Australia. The period during which members of the services would be entitled to the gratuity would terminate at the date of discharge of the member, or 12 months after the cessation of hostilities, whichever was the earlier.
