SHIPS FOR N.Z. TRADE
LONDON. May 24.
Plans for replacing the losses of careo ships during the war have been made by Shaw Savill and the New Zealand* and Federal shipping companies. Shaw Savill has already ordered two vessels of 13,000 tons, one of which is now building at Liverpool. The New Zealand Shipping and the Federal company have added six ships to their fleet during the war. Three more vessels are now building, and a further three will be laid down next year. Those built during the war were three 10,000 tonners and three 12,000 tonners. Two 10,000 tonners are now building, and one of 12,000. Those which will be laid down next year will be all 12,000 tonners. -
The Shaw Savill ship at Liverpool is being built by Cammell Laird, while that to be laid down at Belfast will be constructed by Harland and Woolf. It is expected the ships will be delivered in about 18 months' time. They will both be refrigerated cargo vessels. It is understood that all merchant and passenger ships will continue tft be requisitioned till the end of th« war with Japan, and that several win be required for moving troops for some time after hostilities have ceased. Ships such as the Dominion Monarch, which are now carrying troops, will then have to be reconditioned and re* equipped for the normal peacetime trade. , ■
