ASHES OF JAPANESE

NEW YORK, May 25

A correspondent in Manila states that ashes of 7000 dead Japanese have been found at Wiriu Mission, three miles south of Wewak, by Australian troops. A small mountain of miniature boxes contained the ashes, which are believed to be from the cremation of Japanese soldiers killed in action in the-sector since December, 1942.

The Japanese custom where possible is to send the ashes back to the homeland for a ceremonial burial. The Australian authorities will bury the boxes in a cemetery.
