MAGISTRATE'S COURT

In the Magistrate's Court yesterday John Holland, waterside worker, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment for the theft of confectionery from a carton in a Wellington Harbour Board shed. It was stated that the carton had "either been broken or broached and Sub-In-spector McHugh, while passing the door of the shed, had seen the accused with his hand inside the carton. Kenneth Duncan McKenzie, labourer, 58, was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within six months if called upon after he had pleaded guilty to the theft of eight gallons of petrol, valued at £1 2s, from the Atlantic Union Oil Company's store at Kaiwarra, where he was employed as a watchman. It was stated that the accused had taken the petrol from a tank wagon and sold it to another man for 5s a gallon. An order for restitution was made.

Peter Mansfield Shelly, 22, pleaded guilty to the theft at Auckland of an overcoat and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, to be served at the conclusion of a sentence he is already serving. Henry Alston Pye, carpenter, pleaded guilty and was fined £10 for making a false statement to the police. It was stated that Pye had a previous record, and had been afraid that he would be blamed for theft* which were occurring at the private hotel where he was staying, so he made a false statement to the police that he also had been robbed. The following cases, for breaches of the man-power regulations, were dealt with by Mr. W. F. Stilwell S.M.:—

Joan Margaret Shirley Cowan, domestic, 22, pleaded guilty to failing to work at the public hospital when directed and was convicted and ordered to pay costs.

Queenie Cunningham, factory assistant, 22, pleaded guilty to leaving essential employment at Alex. Harvey and Sons (Wgtn.), Ltd., without the permission of the man-power officer, and with failing to resume work when ordered. She was fined £1 and costs on each charge. Phellis Mariee Martensson, machinist. 27.i who did not appear, was lined £5 for failing to report for an interview at the man-power cflice when called upon and £1 for failing to notify a change of address.
