DISABLED SERVICEMEN'S GREEN
Progress with the establishing of a bowling green for disabled servicemen has been advanced to a stage of readiness for the formation of a club. Mr. C. M. Turnbull, who has been active in sponsoring this valuable addition to recreational facilities for disabled servicemen, reports that the area facing the Training Centre in Lloyd Street is in splendid order and promises to provide an excellent green for play at the commencement of next season. All that remains so far as the green is concerned is for the grass to be- cut at the appropriate time. The organising of the club is now to be undertaken, and a meeting of all interested has been called for next Tuesday night at the Disabled Servicemen's Training Centre. , From the lead given by the Wellington Bowling Centre,, after representations by Mr. Turnbull, the late Mr. Frank Ross, and others, the bowlers of Wellington took up the appeal for a disabled servicemen's green enthusiastically, and it has been largely through their efforts, with support from the general public, that the green has become an accomplished fact. Over £5000 has been subscribed, and of that sum a little over £2200 has been spent. In addition to the laying down of the green, a work carried out by Mr. George Crawford, concrete fences have been built and seats provided. With a view to erecting a pavilion, an adjoining property has been purchased, and the balance of the money in hand is to be used for converting the house property to a pavilion and for the provision of other accessories. The disabled servicemen's bowling club, the first to be formed in New Zealand, is expected to be strongly supported, and it is hoped that all interested will attend Tuesday's meeting. <
