WAR PRISONERS
GOOD PROGRESS MADE According to official advice received from the United Kingdom, satisfacfactory progress was being made in the release and transfer from Europe of New Zealand prisoners of war, stated the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) today. . The Minister gave the following summary of the latest position:— , Navy. Army. Air. Tl. Number of N.Z. prisoners in Europe at March 1, 1945 .. 10 6519 461 6990 Released and returned to date 1 5069 365 5441 Balance not yet accounted for 3 1450 96 1549 "It is probable that many of the,men not yet accounted for have in fact been released, and are in Europe awaiting transport to the United Kingdom," said the Minister. "Such a substantial decrease within the course of a few . weeks can only be regarded as extremely satisfactory and a magnificent tribute to the work of the transport squadrons of the Allied air forces."
