HOURS AFTER ATTACK
GREAT SCALE OF RAID (By Telegraph—Press -Association—Copyright.) Rec. 1 p.m. NEW YORK, May 24. Five hours after the incendiary attack by Super-Fortresses on Tokio in the early hours yesterday, the Doiriei news agency reported that some »fires: were still burning. 1 : The raid was equivalent to 2000 Fly--ing Fortresses or Liberators raiding Berlin from English bases. The crews reported seeing "balls of fire," believed to be rocket-propelled flying bombs with suicide pilots. Japanese broadcasts said that 180 American carrier planes attacked suicide plane bases, in southern Japan today and another formation of about 40 planes attacked Shizuoka and Hamamatsu, coastal cities south-west of Tokio. The situation is becoming more desperate for the Japanese, who are now anticipating the loss of supplies from Manchuria and Korea. The Minister of Agriculture, Tadaatsu Ishiguro, announced a new food production programme, designed to stand the test of a war lasting from 20 to 30 years. The programme will make eac^ section' of japan self-sufficient if the country is cut up by invasion, he claimed.
