EVASION OF TAXES
MR. MORGENTHAirS TRIALS Rec. 12.45 p.m. o* WASHINGTON, May _24. The Secretary of the Treasury^ Mr. Henry Morgenthau, jun., told a Press conference that the Treasury was seeking 5000 additional Treasury field agents immediately to investigate the fast-mounting cases of tax evasion. He said: "We are running into so many shocking cases. It is revolting and disgusting that anybody with a fine business in wartime should try to make illegal profits by tax evasion." - . . T He instanced the owner of a New York restaurant chain who "voluntarily disclosed when an invest\? at _10n °* the company's books began" 220,000 dollars over three years that he overlooked in filing his returns. Mr. Morgenthau said that the restaurant owner sent an armoured car around his restaurants daily and picked up a certain amount of cash which, he placed in various vaults throughout the city. He added: "There are thousands and thousands of cases which we are unable to investigate be* cause of the shortage, of staff, "~ ;'
