HISTORIC INKSTAND
The re-elected chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board (Mr. W. H. Price) presented to the board on Wednesday a silver inkstand which has its own history. From 1885 to 193^ it went to and fro in the writing-room of the s.s. Mararoa. The stand has a sentimental value as, apart from its age (60 years), it was used by many thousands of passengers in the various trades the steamer had been engaged in, and is therefore an interesting link with the past, whilst the mounting is part of the totara timber used in the Queen's Wharf structure from 1862 to 1924, at which the Mararoa frequently berthed. It was appropriate that such a memento should be in the custody of a public body controlling the home port of this vessel, said Mr. Price when handing it to the chief executive officer (Mr. F. W. Reed).
