ROYAL MUSK AT ODDS

WAIKATO MEETING

OPEN SPRINT TO NEPETA

(Special to "The Post.")

AUCKLAND, April 28. what was to be a bad day for backers started with a long-shot winning the Hunters' Steeplechase at the Waikato Patriotic Meeting, with big prices being paid also for the three places. Roman Orator gave a fine display of good, free jumping and he easily held off Moko Moko. The latter crashed four fences from home, leaving Colonel Bing in second place, but Brown Ronald finished on to get second money. Lord Mascot and Wildore did best of the others. This was Roman Orator's first success, and it was distinctly promising.

Black Beret atoned for many disappointments when he outstayed Theoress in the First Montgomery Hack Handicap, but the unlucky runner was Land Warden-, who came on the scene when the race was nearly over. Theoress and Jeep carried the field along from barrier rise, with Laddie Boy and Prince Revel always handy. Theoress looked a good thing half-way up the running, but then weakened. Prince Revel, Laddie Boy, and Jeep finished close behind Land Warden.

Prominent all the way, Royal Musk, who was still eligible for hack events, downed a weak field in the Churchill Handicap, this being easily his best race to date. With a little over half a mile to go Neenah was rushed into j the lead in an effort to steal the race and was soon half a dozen lengths clear. However, Royal Musk was fairly handy to Neenah making for the straight and it was not long before he had collared the topweight, and he went on to score a comfortable win. Gay Chat, a solid favourite who had been in the ruck all the time, came home well for a modest third, clear of Llandine, Dumbo, and Peterhead. Brantome gave a very good exhibition to win the Cunningham Hurdles, the opposition proving to be weak. The novices, Hunting Camp and Gay Lysander, set a solid pace for the early part, jumping well, but once* into the back stretch Brantome headed them pff and that was the end of it. A big outsider in Brome finished too well for Spring Day, Hunting Mac, Phaleron, and Etaro. It was a stylish performance on the part of Brantome, who is in the Great Northern Hurdles. The Awapuni representative, Beneve, won the Stalin Plate comfortably, outstaying the field.. Fox Hunting, New Battle, Manora, Ballinasloe, Esmonde, Lucky Alex, and Rival chased him past the.post in that order. Highland View went a good race, but his rider asked him to win half a mile from home. A maiden in Brown Atom won the Second Montgomery Hack Handicap from1 another maiden in Colonel Dink. Persisto, Fencourt, and Brown Atom were racing in line early, but once into the straight Brown Atom ran right away from Colonel Dink, who-had improved his position at the turn. Golden One came on for third, ahead of Tower J Lady, Zulu Boy, and Master Dink. Nepeta and Tiger Tan shared favouritism in the Eisenhower Handicap, and while the former scored easily Tiger Tan was never prominent. Tutere made the play early, Powys joining him, but at the home turn Nepeta, Expellant, and'Altess were overhauling, the leaders. In the run-in there was only one horse in it, Nepeta scoring very decisively. Expellant and Altess filled the other places, with Powys. Merry Vaals, and Lady Pay next. For once Riverlands Roe reproduced his good track -work, and as a result he never gave his opponents in the Roosevelt Memorial a look in. Once heads were turned for home he got to the front early and this time he stayed it right out. Valley Boy, who was running out his hack nomination, defeated the remainder just as easily, and the consistent Hunting Park made his record three thirds oh end. Hippodrome and Cracroft went fair races. THE DETAILED RESULTS. The weather was showery for the early races but cleared. The track was soft.
