CASE OF STUTTGART

OCCUPATION CONTROVERSY

LONDON, April 28. A statement issued by SHAEF declares that the French army is obstructing the Allied drive south-west against the Nazi redoubt by its persistence in holding on to Stuttgart in the post-war occupational controversy. The statement adds that the instructions of the 6th Army Group to the French army in reference to their presence in Stuttgart were not concerned with the future of the territory, nor the zones to be occupied by French troops, but that Stuttgart was included in the operational boundaries of the 7th Army and not of the Ist French Army.

The Paris correspondent of Reuters says that the French ■ Government backed up General de Tassigny in his determination to remain in occupation of Stuttgart, but instructed him to avoid at all costs any incidents between French and American troops. Rec. 9 a.m. LONDON, April 29. The French army's claim to maintain occupation of Stuttgart has been settled to the satisfaction of all concerned, says the Paris correspondent of the British United Press. Details of the agreement are not disclosed, but it is believed that the 7th Army will occupy Stuttgart as long as it needs it for a supply base, without prejudice to the French claim for the city to be included in the French post-war occupation zone. A French military government fneanwhile is being maintained in Stuttgart.
