EASTWARD DRIVE

CONTINUED ON MINDANAO

Rec. 9 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 26. General Mac Arthur's communique today says that the 24th Division, on Mindanao, has continued its eastward drive along Highway One, gaining 12 miles, and is now less than 20 miles from the shore of Davao Gulf. Air units gave close support to our ground forces on Luzon, maintaining continuous pressure on the enemy, while the army forces breached his defences. Medium attack and fighter-bombers dropped 400 tons, with excellent results.

Heavy bombers again struck at aerodromes on Formosa. Our air patrols blockading the China coast wrecked 12 freighters, river boats, and patrol craft, from Hong Kong south to IndoChina. Heavy bombers hit Miri, on the north-west coast of Borneo, destroying buildings and oil-storage tanks. Air patrols sank a small freighter off the south coast and set fire to warehouses in Sourabaya. Fighter-bombers attacked bridges in IZalmahera and strafed the Amboisa aerodromes. Patrols bombed Timor.
