W.C.T.U. CONVENTION
INDETERMINATE SENTENCES
P.A. DUNEDIN, This Day. A protest against "indeterminate sentences" imposed on conscientious objectors was made at the annual Dominion convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union in Dunedin. The following resolution was adopted unanimously:—"That this convention believes that such long, continued, and indeterminate confinement as is being served by many conscientious objectors, and Jack of opportunity for appealing, are contrary to the principles of justice. The convention urges, therefore, that an appeal tribunal* be set up immediately and that the men who have undergone such long punishment for the possession of conscientious belief be released to carry out useful work in the community."
Resolutions were also adopted urging the Government to ration intoxicating liquors and asking that on the declaration of peace and during subsequent celebrations the sale of liquor be prohibited.
The convention adopted a remit from Wellington suggesting that civilian widows receive the same pension as war widows. : ' - .-.-
