COMPULSION URGED
LOCAL SUPERANNUATION
The introduction of a compulsory superannuation scheme for all permanent employees in local government service was necessary and would make'for the more efficient operation of local body administration, said the Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities' Association in evidence to the Parliamentary Committee on Local Government today.
If such a scheme were universally adopted, it would allow a free transfer of employees within the service, whereas at present many capable employees were debarred from seeking promotion by transfer to another local body "not a contributor to the scheme, on account of the loss of all superannuation rights which * had accrued through previous service.
Employees who were contributors under the present local authorities' superannuation scheme were dissatisfied with its existing provisions, the benefits of which were quite unsuited to" present-day requirements, having remained unaltered .since its introduction in 1914.
The association therefore- urged the Government to give early and, favourable consideration to the proposals for enlarging the scope and increasing the benefits of its scheme, proposals which, it was understood, had been submitted to the Government by the National Provident Fund Department, and that it be made compulsory for all local authorities to become contributors to the scheme for the benefit of their permanent employees.
