AMERICANS WARNED

COAL STRIKE POSSIBLE

Rec. 1 p.m. NEW YORK, Feb. 26. Mr. John L. Lewis has notified the Secretary of Labour, Miss Frances Perkins, that a bituminous coal strike may occur in 30 days. The present wage contract expires on March 31. Negotiations for a new contract begin on March -1. \ . ■

Mr. Lewis pointed out that notice was issued because failure to do so rendered the mine workers liable to the penalties prescribed in the SmithConnally Act, which Mr. Lewis bitterly denounced, saying that the issuing of the warning might itself precipitate a strike. • .

Mr. Lewis declared that on the eve of the new negotiations a situation had arisen bordering upon conspiracy to prevent agreement - and provoke chaotic conditions in the coal industry. Mr. Lewis called on the Government and coal management to cease hostile action and adopt a reasonable cooperative attitude conductive to a new contract and uninterrupted coal production.
