BURMA FIGHTING
SUCCESS OF CHINESE
Rec. 11 a.m. R^BY, Feb. 23,: Troops of the Chinese. Fiftieth Division yesterday captured Panghai, on the north bank of the Namtu River opposite Namtu. Two attacks on the Twenty-third Corps' bridgehead positions south of the Irrawaddy opposite Myinmu were repulsed. North of Mandalay our positions in the Singu bridgehead were subjected to enemy snelling. Disorganised parties of Japanese who attempted to escape from Ramree Island are returning to the north-east corner from the mangrove swamps and are being surrounded. The pursuit from the Kangaw area continues. In Arakan, aircraft of the Eastern Air Command bombed Japanese concentrations and caused road blocks in the path of the enemy retreat. Aircraft on offensive sweeps # west and south of Mandalay attacked clumps and supply areas and many rivercraft, and road and rail traffic was damaged, while the Irrawaddy oil pipe-line was holed and mines were laid in enemy waters. Two Allied aircraft are missing.— 8.0. W.
