YACHTING

HOUDINI WINS

After an exciting finish the Wellington boat Houdini, sailed by W. Hayman, won the second race in the Tauranga class, national yachting championship, held on Port Nicholson today. From the start, Nelson took the lead and maintained it until nearly the finish, keeping about 25 seconds in front of Wellington. South Canterbury withdrew soon after the start after capsizing two or three times. The rest of the boats were in a bunch throughout the race and all capsized several times. The Canterbury boat lost considerable time through this but made a good recovery. Nelson led Wellington on the run from the last buoy to the finishing line, but Wellington skilfully outsailed her and won by ten seconds. The Nelson boat will not be able to take second place, as she slightly fouled Wellington a few seconds before the finish. The Canterbury boat was the third to finish.

The positions in which the boats finished and their times are as follows;—

Wellington, 48min 15sec, 1; Nelson, 48min 25sec, 2; Canterbury, 51min 30 sec, 3; Auckland, 51min 50sec, 4.
