AUSTRALIAN DUST STORMS
(Special P.A. Correspondent.) SYDNEY, December 18. Dust storms were still raging at many places today.
The New South Wales Divisional Meteorologist, Mr. Mares, said that for magnitude and intensity he could not remember anything as bad as these storms. The prolonged dry spell and persistent winds had so fined down the soil that it had lost its cohesive properties.
In spite of scattered showers in some areas, a continuation of warm, dry conditions is predicted. The Riverina district in south-western New South Wales, which has received the full brunt of the drought, has been free from dust storm on only four days in the last 25. Some of the residents have had to cart water by motor-lorry for more than 50 miles, and thousands of head of stock have died during the last few .months. The present fine, hot weather is likely to continue at least until alter Christmas.
