N.Z. CANNERS FEDERATE

TJjie formation of the New Zealand Fruit and Vegetable Canners' Federation was the outcome of a meeting at Wellington last week. Enlarged by the production of canned foods for New Zealand and Allied forces overseas, fruit and vegetable canning is the sixth basic industry using primary products to establish a national organisation within the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation. The president of the new organisation is Mr. C. Milner, Nelson,-, and the executive comprises Messrs. H. G. Maehl, Wellington, J. Wattie, Hastings, and R. S. Thompson and J. R. Butland both of Auckland. The secretary is i Mr. D. I. Macdonald, Wellington. ! After the meeting, the canners met Mr. J. E. Thomas, Food Controller, under whose direction Dominion fruit and vegetable canneries have produced for war contracts. Tribute was paid to Mr. Thomas's administration of co-operative war production, and regret expressed that health reasons were causing his retirement from office- /n reply, Mr. Thomas congratulated the industry on more than doubling its peacetime production to meet wartime demands.
