ESCAPEES IN REICH
ALLIED PRISONERS AND FOREIGN WORKERS
LONDON, December 5.
Fifty thousand Allied, prisoners of war and foreign workers are at large in southern Germany, state reports reaching Switzerland from-Berlin. The escapees are living the life of outlaws! in the Black Forest. The Germans believe that underground organisations in Germany are assisting the escapees, most of whom are trying to-reach the Swiss frontier or the Allied lines on the Western Front. The Zurich correspondent of the "Daily Express" says that Himmler has sent strong S.S. detachments to Baden, the province on the. Rhine opposite Alsace-Lorraine, to round up the fugitives. He adds that the Germans are searching all travellers within 12 miles of the Swiss border, and those who cannot prove their identity are shot.
