HALSEY'S ACTION

MISSING PILOTS SAVED

Rec. 11.30 a.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 5. The Mutual Broadcasting System's co--respondent says that during the recent combined air and naval attack against Manila, Admiral Halsey's Third Fleet encountered a terrible and sudden storm.

Several squadrons of the carrier fleet were in the air. The final tabulations showed that 40 pilots were missing.

In a characteristic decision, Admiral Halsey immediately cancelled his strike against Manila and next morning ordered his vast fleet to comb the waters with all its ships and every available plane with the result that he saved all the pilots except two. Whereupon Admiral Halsey directed that the Manila strike should be resumed.
