To Help the Merchant Navy.
The ladies'guild of the British Sailors Society will hold an afternoon function at 138 Wakefield Street on Thursday. The Petone Lyric Singers will be the guest artists. There is to be a bring-and-buy table to help the funds for Christmas cheer and a silver coin collection wiU be made. Everyone is invited to attend and thereby help the men of the Merchant Navy. Seatoun W.N.K. V The annual meeting of the Seatoun feranch of the Women's National Reserve Residential Nursery (Owen Street) was held recently. Mrs. Porter, president of the executive, was in the ;chair. The branch president. Mrs. .Lancaster, read her report reviewing the activities of the year, and stating that it was most satisfactory, both financially and socially. Mrs. Porter congratulated the branch on its en- •. vhusiastic support. Shoulder sprays, made by Mrs. Gardiner, were presented to Mesdames Porter, Lancaster, Cogian, and Newey. The following officers were re-elected for the .coming year.—President, Mrs/ Lancaster; treasurer, Mrs. ■ Newey; vice-presidents, Mesdames Stone, Gardiner, Snelling, Pycroft, Mesdames, and Davis. Death in America. ~ Cabled advice has been received of the death m San Francisco on November 23 of Arini (Rene), wife'of Gilbert Ball and only daughter of Major W. G: Ashworth and Mrs. Ashworth, Palmerston North. Before she and her husband left for the United States 16 years ago, Mrs. Ball took a prominent part in- musical and dramatic activities and was.well fitted for the numerous roles she played as leading soprano lor the Palmerston North Operatic I Society. She was also a member of! the Manawatu Golf Club and the Palmerston North Lawn Tennis Club. After taking up residence in America Mrs. Ball continued her interests and more recently was an active organiser of* social clubs for visiting New Zealand servicemen. She was bom at Hunterville 43 years ago.
