When a more minute examination of the gallery was made the custodian discovered instances of minor damage to J e +l ? thl r Pointings. The best known of the five, "Ena Papatai," a portrait by C. P. Goldie of a Maori celebrity was found to bear a small scratch-mark on the face. A similar knife-scratch appeared on another painting. A" third bore a knife-stab mark, a fourth carried a nondescript mark, arid the fifth a miniature, appeared to have been holed with a small. instrument like a compass.

The damage to the five last-named paintings could be fairly easily repaired, it was stated by an authority, but any repairs to the large painting would, because of the difficulty entailed, be costly.
