NAVAL AWARDS
NORMANDY OPERATIONS
Advice has been received from the Admiralty that the King has approved of the award of Mention in Dispatches to Temporary Lieutenant Thomas Joseph Bourke and Temporary Sub-Lieutenant Thomas Marmaduke Suriderland, R.N.Z.N.V.R., for services in conveying troops and supplies to Normandy. s ' Lieutenant Bourke was born in. Wellington on March 22, 1915, and his civil occupation was a wool scourer He joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as an ordinary seaman for "hostilities only" on October 21, 1941, and after serving with the Royal Navy was promoted to temporary'sub-lieutenant, R.N.Z.N.V.R., on November 20 1942 and temporary lieutenant on November 20, 1943. His ■ next-of-kin is his father Mr J. J. Bourke; Western Hutt Road, Wellington. Sub-Lieutenant Sundenland was S9S 1 in Havetock North on August 6, 1920, and prior to his entry into the Navy was a shepherd. He joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as an ordinary* seaman (Scheme "B"), on December 8, 1941, and after completing his training with the Royal Navy was ■& rSF™xr& tem P°rary sub-lieutenant, R.N.Z.N.V.R., on January 8, 1943. His next-of-km is his mother, Mrs. N Sunderland, ; Undercliff, Havelock .North.
