GENERAL'S NEW POST
WASHINGTON, December 1. The. Marine Corps announced the appointment of Major-General Julian Smith as Commanding General of the Department of the' Pacific with headquarters at San Francisco. Major-General Smith commanded Marine Corps fdrces at the invasion of Tarawa .and Palau.
Major-General Smith succeeded Major-General John L. Marston as commander of the Second Marine Division when it was in this country. For some months his residence was in Wellington. *
