FRIENDS NEEDED
HOME FACING CRISIS
Mrs. E. H. M. Luke, president of the Levin Memorial Home, . Berhampore, when speaking at the "bring and. buy" held in the Public Library lecture hall last week in aid of the home's finances, said there had never been.a time'in the history of the home when, funds were more badly needed. The home, which was established more than half a century ago, was facing a crisis, partly through the war. The building was in a state of disrepair. It was flooded at the weekend, • and the installation of a new hot water system was necessary. Staff shortages were increasing year by year. The committee was endeavouring tQ cope with many trying situations. They had been forced to draw .on the home's small capital for current expenses. It was hbped that a more modern and suitable establishment would some day replace the existing building. Anyone with vision would realise that in the future such work as was .being accomplished by the Levin Memorial Home would be vitally needed in New Zealand.
When introducing. Mrs.. G. P. H. Davidson, who opened the sale, Mrs. Luke said she had been a. loyal supporter for a long time and those who had worked for the home .might well be proud of its history.. Mrs. Davidson appealed for public support, • saying that-it would be a tragedy if the work of the home were to lapse. The "bring and buy" took the place of the annual gift tea. Stall-holders were Mesdames E. H. M. Luke,B. S. Lyons, F. Archibald, F. Gofton, ,p. E. de B; Brandon. C. E. W. Levin, A. J. Du. Pont, A. Morris Jones, and R. G. Macmorran. Conveners included Mesdames E. M. Poole (Eastbourne), P. Grant, and H. Gilmer; and Misses D. Greenwood (Eastbourne), M. Hempton, E. Young, and M. McDcugal. Over £100 was raised by this effort.
