TURF NOTES

HIGHLY RATED

STOCK OF MR. STANDFAST

It was an unfortunate day for New Zealand when Beau Pere was sold to Australia, although this Son-in-Law horse did not remain there very long, being purchased by an American picture magnate. Further misfortune befell us when .Beau. Pere's half-brother, Mr. Standfast, was also allowed to go to Australian' interests, for his Dominion gets have done - particularly well. The Buchan horse is now being freely represented by winners in Australia, and the value placed on his stock is reflected in a report of a bloodstock sale held recently in Queensland. All previous sale-ring prices went by the board in Brisbane, when 3500gs was paid for a colt by Mr. Standfast from Panlarid. More astounding was the fact that offers of 3600gs and 2350gs were declined for a colt by Mr. Standfast from Spear Queen and a filly by the same sire from Gay Stepper, Although they appeared to be fabulous prices to Brisbane racing men, the breeder would not come below the reserve figure of 4000gs for the colt and 2500gs for the filly. . ' Temporary Duty.—ln the absence of Mr. A. V O'Brien, who is indisposed, the duties of judge at the Otaki Maori Meeting on Saturday will'be carried out by Mr. T. -Parata, who served in an honorary capacity to the club for many years. .Good Showing.—Twelve months'ago Mr. S. J. Newland, of Wellington, won the Hastings Stakes with Snvio, and he went close to. carrying oft' the honours again on Saturday per medium of Gigli, a bay coit by Defoe from the Robespierre mare Haughty Toti, who was a daughter of the Gay Lad—Trebelli II mare Toti dal Monte. Haughty Toti is a sister to Rebel Song and half-sister to .Silvox and Screamer, and the • grandam was a half-sister to the brilliant ~Autopay, Sopra (dam of Reonui, a good--winner in Australia), High Note;(dam of Concertpitch), and to Maypay, who'- was exported to America, where she produced Running Lights, a. promising stayer. Gigli cost his owner 575gs at the Sales. Family Speed.—Bred and raced by Mr. T. Coltman, of Wellington, Theorist, a three-year-old filly by Theio from-the Paladin mare Zarisee, ran a very promising race in the hack sprint at the Foxton Meeting, it being her first outing.in public. At Hastings on Saturday sne went very close to winning tha Imperial Plate, and it is unlikely that the half-sister to Dollar Bill, Pay Roll,-etc., will be at such odds when next she figures under silk. Bright aiid Well.—Last season Glenfallocn started off on a winning trot at the Hawke's Bay spring gathering when he- won the Hastings Spring Handicap, li miles, and he then went on to add the Masterton Handicap and: the Wellington Handicap at his next two starts. He had his first outing since returning from a spell at Hastings.on Saturday, but on this occasion he contested the Flying Handicap. That speedster Skyhawk set' a rather torrid pace, but the son of Kincardine and Memnon was putting in good work in the closing stages to fill third berth. 'All.going, well,-he should be a force to be contended with in the big handicaps that lie ahead^ .On Easy List,—After winning the Geraldine Cup, Findon was given a dose of physic. He will remain in the south till the approach of the Wellington Meeting, and after racing here will go on to Gisborne to be spelled during the summer. The grey does not figure in the Wellington Handicap, having been nominated for the Wainui- Handicap, 1 mile, on the opening day. He has, been entered for the Harcourt Stakes and Pearce Handicap oii the Monday. , Returning.—Ganges was nominated for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Meeting, but will not be on hand. The intention is tb bring the Bulandshar gelding back to this island and put him aside till later in the season. He has. shown his best form ' on easy tracks. ' Broken Down.—Dark Felt, winner of last year's Melbourne Cup, and one of! the early favourites for this year's contest, has broken, down hopelessly, and it.is doubtful if he'will ever face again. Bought as a maiden for 500gs, Dark Felt went on to win £11,395. To be Spelled.—Tomahawk, the big Coronach three-year-old in F. D. Jones's stable at Riccarton, has. not done well of late, and is to be turned out for "a spell.
