TEERIFIC POUNDING
ENEMY PUNISHED AT BREST Rec. 1 p.m., LONDON, Sept. 1. ■ The German commander at Brest, Lieut-General Hermann Ramcke, refuses to surrender to the Americans by whom Ms garrison has been isolated, says the Exchange Telegraph correspondent in 'Brittany. General Ramcke, who led the paratroop invasion of Crete, when called on to surrender, replied: "Not a chance. You can dispense with the formality of asking me again." It is estimated that about 20,000 Germans are in Brest, which is taking a terrific artillery, naval, and air pounding. " LONDON, September 1. The -German garrison troops in Brest have been forbidden by. their commander to listen to the radio. A cap* tured American doctor told an American commander this yesterday when he brought a letter from the German i commander under a flag of truce. The doctor said (that the Germans inside Brest did not know of the liberation of Paris or. of the Allied landings in southern France. The letter notified the Americans that a new German hospital area has ..been built on the western side of the harbour. This is taken as an indication that casualties inside the city are high. ■ American spearheads are now less than six miles from the centre of Brest, where big fires are burning.
