STRUGGLE IN CHINA
Rec. 10 a.m. CHUNGKING, July 27. The Chinese recaptured the important railway town of Leiyang, 34 miles from Hengyang, where bitter lighting is still proceeding, says a Chinese communique. A Japanese column moving eastward from Changsha, in Hunan Province, has entered Kiangsi Province, pushing to within 12 mil" of Lingsiang.
The Associated Press says that this drive was probably intended to strengthen the Japanese left flank and seize several important airfields in Kiangsi Province.
General Stilwell's communique reports that American Warhawks, without loss, shot down six Japanese planes and damaged eight over Yochow as the 14th Air Force continued strongly to support the ground forces in Hunan.
Mitchells considerably damaged Tengchung. Others sank a 4000-ton transport near Swatow. Warhawks shot up railway rolling-stock in northeast Indo-China.
