RECONQUEST OF GUAM
ASSAULT FORCES LINKED
NEW YORK, July 26. Marines and army troops after five days of hard fighting; have wiped out the last pockets of resistance round the beach-heads on Guam, reports the representative of the Allied Press. They have linked their two assault forces through patrol contacts *and shut the Japanese escape corridor on Orote Peninsula.
The tanks are playing a prominent part in the attack in spite of the mountainous country. Tanks pushed the enemy off the road leading to Mt. Tenjo, overlooking Apra Harbour, the best anchorage in the Marianas. No Japanese planes have appeared oyer the American forces since the beginning of the naval bombardment on July 3. The Japanese are using some artillery to stave off the attacks, but this is described as ineffective.
The American commander. MajorGeneral Geiger, said after making* an inspection of the front line: "The beaches are Avell secured, and there is nothing the Japs can do to run us off."
