THE FIRST WEEK
BEACH-HEAD PUSH
Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, May 30. The first week of the beach-head offensive ended on Tuesday, with the Allies hammering at the strong barrier on the way to Rome erected by the Germans on a line running south-west from Velletri to the coast, two miles northward of the Moletta River, writes a correspondent at Anzio. Advances of upwards of six miles have been made in this area since the attack was launched on Friday morning, in terrain that did not favour the attackers. American armour has been thrown into the battle and a bitterly contested -struggle is now in progress in an area some five miles south of Lake Albano. On the left, British forces are steadily pressing the Germans back towards Compotemini, the westernmost point of the German line. To the north we are now poised before Valmontone and Velletri, and have Highway 6 under fire.—B.O.W. LONDON, May 30. We have captured part of Campoleone and three or four miles of the road linking it with Ardea, which is also inj our hands. ~ I
