CHECK-UP ON TROOPS
PRE-INVASION PRECAUTION LONDON, May 17. The entire United States Army in Britain, except units in transit, was confined to barracks for the 24 hours ended midnight last night, with the object of checking the credentials of every man on duty in this theatre of war. The credentials of men in barracks were examined, and military police stopped those in the streets, including officers. Rec. 1 p.m. LONDON, May 17. At least one general was held up until he produced his identity card during a careful pre-invasion checkup by the Allied military authorities of troops in Britain. Armed American soldiers in full fighting kit held up buses, stopped cars, and questioned civilians. . « The search, which was made by British and Allied military police, with the co-operation of the Metropolitan Police, was aimed at tracing not only Army absentees and deserters, but also any undesirables masquerading in United Stales uniforms. Not only American soldiers, but also members of all the British and Allied services were questioned and their credentials demanded.
