PRICE OF TYRES

O.C. PALMERSTON N., This Day. The council of the North Island Motor Union is far from satisfied with a reply from the Minister of Industries and Commerce to a complaint that the cost of tyres in New Zealand is too high when compared with the same article in Australia. The union had given the Minister figures. For instance one particular size was retailed at £5 16s in Australia but £9 13s in New Zealand. Further, there was a discount on the Australian price when export to New Zealand was made, which reduced the Australian price to £3 9s 7d. The Minister, in reply, said the figures quoted were not quite right, but confined himself mainly to a recital of freight charges, etc., but members of the Union Council suggested that the Minister should know that all these charges had existed from the time trade was initiated. There the matter was left. The Government is to be asked to make available, odd sizes in tyres needed for farm vehicles. It was stated they were available in Australia.
