EMPIRE CASUALTIES

N.Z.'S MAGNIFICENT EFFORT Rec. 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, April 6. "New Zealand's magnificent fighting war effort is underlined by the official statistics of the Empire casualties," says the Sydney "Daily Telegraph" in an editorial today. "This little nation has suffered 25,717 casualties, representing about one in 63 of the population. That compares with one in 119 for the United Kingdom, one in 96 for Australia, and one in 580 for Canada.

"The New Zealanders did not withdraw their troops from abroad when the. Japanese came into the war, although they were further out on a' limb even than Australia. .Their men have been in the front of the heaviest fighting which the.British arms have shared. The British casualties look small compared with New Zealand's, but Britain-has yet to face the second front, of course. The Empire's casualty figures will read very differently before we are in Berlin."
