A LONGER EASTER
ACTION AT WESTFIELD P.A. AUCKLAND, April 5. . The management of the Westfield Freezing Company, Limited, was informed today that the slaughtermen at its works will cease work at midday tomorrow instead of continuing for the whole day. Their Easter holidays were to have been from Friday till Tuesday, both days inclusive. It was stated that the matter has been referred to the National Service Department. . It was learned fairly early in the day that the sheep and lamb slaughtermen intended to stop at midday tomorrow, but later the management was informed that all the slaughtermen were going to take the same action. There are about 100 slaughtermen at the works. The stoppage of work on their part will affect the related departments and will mean that the whole works will virtually close till next Wednesday. A representative of the company said the immediate effect would be that several thousand head of stock would have to be carried over till Wednesday. This in turn would mean that work-would then be started on an accumulation of stock .and the works would not be able to draw further supplies from farmers as quickly as they would if a full day were worked tomorrow or as rapidly as the season demanded. All the stock being killed was for either Great Britain or the forces in the Pacific.
