EDUCATION BILL
LABOUR PARTY SUPPORT
Rec. 1.30 p.m. RUGBY, Jan 20. The Labour Party will _ support the Government's new Education Bill. Mr. Arthur Greenwood, announcing this in the House of Commons during the second reading debate on the Bill, said: "The Bill represents a considerable and long advance in educational provisions. It would be disastrous if they were wrecked by any religious controversy." Regarding religious teaching in schools, he said that the Labour Party had reached the conclusion that the President of the Board of Education had made a sincere attempt to meet the widely differing views of the Christian churches and the general public. The proposals regarding the school leaving age seemed to be left in a loose state. He would have preferred to have seen the leaving age raised to 16 next year. The Bill was read a second time. — 8.0.
